Rosalie and Walter have both stressed the importance of soil type and
climate in determining how much of what to add. My additional 2 cents -
check with your local extension folks to find out what kind of soil you
have. Find out its
TEXTURE (sand, clay, loam, gravel)
NATURAL FERTILITY (without getting technical, some soils don't have much
at all - kinda like hydroponics - and some like Walter's loess and
alluvium are naturally fertile over many years of use without much of
anything being added)
And keep in mind that the soil in your garden may be totally unlike your
neighbors'. In Walter's part of the country, a large area is covered
with loess and alluvium (that's probably from Pleistocene times Rosalie
- not to worry about current floods tho who knows what the next el Nino
will bring). Around here, we have Pleistocene alluvium, pre-Pleistocene
old 'worn out' clay missing whatever tiny amount of topsoil was ever
there, shallow clay over acid shale, gravelly valleys (from thousand
year old floods) and even a dab of Walter's loess here and there on top
of some of our ridges.
So, depending on what you got, copying your neighbors may or may not
work.
Knowledge is power? Hope this isn't too much.
And about the archives - sometimes, we actually came to some conclusions
after a few months or years of sharing different experiences, so even
tho searching the archives is always interesting, we can probably post
some kind of summary of what the archives say. I think that's useful to
a lot of people.

some rain and cooler temps; finally out of the 90s and the calendar says
we are due for frost in a week. ??
