After an absence of six weeks in the summer, I am still catching up on
my iris-talk messages! One that has just passed refered to some of the
older books on irises. A friend has leant me one by Dykes which I find
interesting as it does not appear as a reference too often. It is:-
Irises by W. Rickatson Dykes one of a series on Present-Day Gardening
edited by R. Hooper Pearson and published by T.C. and E.C. Jack in
London.
I assume that this is the 1924 book of Dykes although I wonder as the
title of that book is "Handbook of Garden Irises". Did Dykes write
another book and, if so, why does it not appear in any of the standard
references? Alternatively, was this book published twice under two
names and by two publishers [possibly separately in England and the US]?
The book is an interesting review of the various species in the garden
and in the wild. It has photographic plates of paintings of some of the
species including a dark red I. xiphioides on the cover, something that
I have never seen. Now and again, however, one has to guess at the
present-day names that would apply to the species being discussed.
My friend asked how much the book is worth. any suggestions?
Ian, in Ottawa where we have a light frost for the last couple of nights
and I. lacustris still flowers!
