My French-English dictionary offers the following explanation:

L-es-L : Abbreviation of Licencie-es-Lettres (Licenciate in Letters), the
French equivalent of either a B.A. or an M.A.  W. R. Dykes was a
schoolmaster, ne-c'est-pas?
