Dykes

From: David Silverberg <sil1812@molalla.net>

Ian:
As far as my knowledge goes, Dykes wrote three books:
1. "The Genus Iris" - probably his greatest work.
2. Irises (published in New York by Frederick A. Stokes Co.) Your
assumption was correct that it was published in the U.K. and U.S. Also
with the red I. xiphoides on the front and I. bucharica as the
frontispiece. This was written and published prior to the publication of
the larger monograph. There is no mention in the U.S. edition of its
being a part of the "Present-Day Gardening Series."
3. Handbook of Garden Irises - written by Dykes and, according to the
dust cover on my copy, sold for 12s/6d (read 12 shillings and 6 pence).

There is a fourth book entitled "Dykes on Irises" which is a compilation
of his writings. The title page reads "A Reprint of the contributions of
the late W.R. Dykes, L-es-L., to various journals and periodicals during
the last 20 years of his life." Compiled and edited by Geo. Dillistone.
In the preface, Dillistone indicates that "Irises" (# 2 above) was
published in 1911.
I would be most appreciative is someone of our "talkers" could translate
"L-es-L." Is it an honorary degree? I have never seen it anywhere else
except following Dykes' name.

one and only iris to rebloom this season was DARK CRYSTAL.
