INFO: Garden Magazines

From: "Ian E. & Shirley Efford" <avocet.intl@sympatico.ca>

As I work my way throught the old messages, whilst keeping up with the
new, I noted the discussion on the best gardening magazines. I would
like to put in another plug for Royal Horticultural Society magazine,
THE GARDEN, mentioned by Anner. I have not seen a better
gardening/horticulture magazine anywhere. It combines interesting
articles on gardens and gardening, with reviews of particular genera and
their suitablility for cultivation as well as some on the botany of
those same plants in the wild. I think it is head and shoulders above
any other British or North American magazine and well worth the
membership price. Membership also gives one free access to many display
gardens in Britain and some in Europe and also to an on-line information
service for difficult gardening questions and another "magazine"
on-line. Questions are answered by experts at the RHS, particularly
those at Wisley as well as the libarians, etc. I use this service,
which provides detailed replies within a day or so.

Anner mentioned that the magazine carries RHS business information but
it is probably less than 5% of the total content and much of it,
particularly the descriptions of different workshops, etc. are
interesting in their own right.

Bill might consider sending some N.Am. articles to The Garden.

Anyone have any other suggestions for garden magazines with
substance? And
Anner, perhaps you could tell us how to subscribe to Gardens
Illustrated.

And we should not forget the ,
which is about as good as it gets in some respects, but not as
compelling as
the glossies from the standpoint of visual fodder, and does tell one
rather
more than many of us need to know about Society doings.
