I rescued a few rhizomes of SURRENDER (thanks again to Mike Lowe/HIPS
for identifying this very tough Tompkins cultivar) from under dense
shade of hybrid poplar a few weeks back. One rhizome had been pried
completely out of the ground by one of the growing poplar roots (6 inch
diameter) and had no leaves and no roots. I put it in a new raised bed
with real soil. The rhizome had 5 generations of healthy increase still
alive in one long, segmented 'snake', and now is producing 2 increases
on the great-great grandmother. If they all did this, the earth would
soon be buried in irises.
