Leslie, I don't know why, tho I can probably come up with some wild
explanation, but I have noticed that summer rot fluorishes when the
weather is alternating between heat and drought and deluges like it has
been especially prone to do this summer. Things will be growing fine in
the drought, maybe with a little handwatering, then a 1 to 2 inch
rainfall will bring on a major rot outbreak. Also, I suspect we have
seen a lot more tendency to rot from injury left over from plants
damaged and weakened by the spring freeze cycles that damaged so many
plants. And the hotter drier weather adds stress.

It's been an average year for me once we got past the spring - very
little summer rot, but my garden conditions are pretty extreme and the
weaklings are long gone.

What's happened down in Texas now that the drought is over?
