While bacterial soft rot (Erwinia carotovora) is very difficult to prevent,
it is not that hard to cure. Use a sharpened spoon or a grapefruit spoon
to scrape away all rot. Sterilize the spoon in clorox between uses.
Liberally dust the scraped area with Comet, or any other cleanser that
includes a bleach. That should do it. If you are vigilant, there is no
need to lose any plants to bacterial soft rot.
The rot usually starts at the leaf bases. Look for leaves that are
flopping over and are soft at the base. The earlier you catch it the
better.
I've had a great deal of rot this summer and fall but have not lost a
single plant, thanks to the method described above.
