Re: medians?

Hi,

As President of the Median Iris Society, I guess I should be the one to
explain what median irises are. There are four classes of bearded irises that
make up the median group.

Standard Dwarf Bearded (SDB) 6 to 15.75 inches, blooming after miniature
dwarfs. The original SDBs were crosses between miniature dwarf I. pumila and
tall bearded (TB) irises. Some other species have since been added and
extensive crossing among SDBs has been done.

Intermediate Bearded (IB) 16 - 27.5 inches, blooming after SDBs and before
TBs. Most of these are crosses between the SDBs and TBs. This makes them
three fourths TB. As such they should grow and bloom satisfactorily where TBs
perform.

Border Bearded (BB) 16 - 27.5 inches, blooming with the TBs of which they are
scaled down versions.

Miniature Tall Bearded (MTB) 16 - 25 inches. Blooming with TBs. They are
smaller and daintier in all parts than TBs or BBs, having strict standards for
size. the majority of them are diploids (having 2 sets of chromosomes)
instead of tetraploids as are the other three classes.

Hope this helps. Dorothy Willott
