Arnold and Dan,
It has to be some factor other than the sun. When I lived in
Kentucky, I had some Siberians in full sun and they did great. As long as
they got a drink regularly, they survived in full sun during the hot
drought years in the 1980's when temperatures over 105 F were common and
watering restrictions were imposed.
Looking at the Zone 3 Climate, how reliable is snow cover there? If
the Irises in full sun happen to be in a spot where the snow blows away,
leaving the ground bare, that could well be a factor with Zone 3 winter
cold. Otherwise, I would suspect it is a moisture factor harming the
Siberians.
