Re: Iris Soc. of South Africa Show Report

>>12 October 1998               Dear Heather
 >> Our annual iris show was held on the 10 and 11 October.  Your iris Potpourri Rose won not only the best Louisiana on show but also the best iris on show!  Three flowers opened simultaneously.  La Stupenda was liked by all and they are all asking for a piece.  Charlotte's Tutu looked superb, but the judges preferred Potpourri Rose.  For Dad is a superb yellow and was impressive in the garden.  Frosted Moonbeam must be a favourite of mine with its wax like pale cream flowers.<<

 >>Garnet Storm Dancer had superb colouring but again small blooms for the first blooming period. Jacaranda Lad flowered well.  Princess Leia is also a superb colour and Whispered Promise was a superb flat bloom with an unusual colour.
    Keep well

Dear Glynn,

Many thanks for the wonderful news!  Bernard and I are so proud of your gardening achievements, and thank you for exhibiting our Iris with such panache and style.  You should be congratulated for your achievements too!!

It is wonderful that the Iris have all settled in so well to their new home in Johannesburg.  The climate must be similar to Sydney for them to be growing so well after their trip across the Indian Ocean not that long ago.

Our garden was at peak bloom this weekend.  Thousands of blooms everywhere.  We just didn't know where to look first.  It was real pleasure to be able to walk up and down the rows assessing the seedlings.  We have about 30 which we feel are of sufficient quality to name, including about three near orange ones.  They have come from different attacks on the colour with one being from a red and apricot cross, one from a red and yellow cross and one from rose and red cross. All very exciting.

Bernard's work on the shorter-growing ones (less than 30") has produced about ten new ones that are ruffled, well branched and have good vigour.  Such excitement!!  We are getting a lot with lime green style arms which are tipped butter yellow, and this is really set off with the sunset-toned ones.

Glad to learn that you like PRINCESS LEIA.  She is a really good grower for us, withstands even the stronges winds with ease and each bloom lasts at least four days.  Great for the garden.  The luminous cerise pink is also a favourite with the bees.

Cheers for now, and enjoy the rest of your bloom season.
