These plants had significantly more abnormal flowers than those induced at
the control temperature (22'C constant). The abnormalities included
missing, extra and fused petals. .

Dear Rodney
Always nice to read a posting from you! Firstly, a big THANK YOU for the
information about abnormalities in some plants. Our garden was subjected to
some nice warm (about 25C) days and sudden cold snaps of 7-10C nights just
before bloom season, but when the spikes were up. Several plants were badly
effected with the top blooms being "burnt off" a bit and missing petals etc.
We had put it down to the cold weather, but are grateful to learn that our
hunch was pretty well "on the money". One plant which was effected was a
possible release for next season and on the first blooms was about to get a
spade under it instead, however the rest of the blooms have come out
beautifully, so all is well. This particular LA has six bud placements (all
double socketed) plus two branches, so we were rather distressed at having
to give it the heave ho.
All other effected plants have gone on to bloom with normal flowers
everywhere else on the spike, so we have put the experience down for future
reference.
We have also noticed an interesting trend this year. Some flowers on some
spikes of a particular plant (and this is not the entire clump) are coming
out with four styles instead of three.
It may only be one bloom on a spike (usually the top one) but if repeated
next year will mean that the entire clump will be composted, as I do NOT
believe that the buying public want to purchase Louisiana Iris with four
style arms on ANY blooms. Comments from folk would be appreciated.
I know that some other hybridisers name and release LA's with multiple style
arms as an infrequent option, but I do not really feel that the iris-buying
public accept this as a "quirk" - rather as a "fault". What do you
iris-talk folk feel about multiple style arms (or petals or anything) on
Iris?
Reply privately or via iris-talk is okay with me.
