John Jones mused:

an initial offering at a more reasonable price. (and a lot of billing
errors...)>>
I doubt it.
Aside from anything else, the pre-publication special price offerred through
SIGNA was actually a discounted proposed publication price, which proposed
price was raised very significantly at actual publication to the current
level. In other words, between the time Cambridge offerred SIGNA members the
book at a special pre-publication discount and the time they finally got it
published and distributed they had to raise the price for it. My guess is they
ran into additional production expenses and they are probably not going to
make colossal profit on this one...bluntly speaking.
It is not unusual to see scholarly books from academic presses not offerred
for sale at a discount from Amazon or B&N or whatever. They are frequently
sold at less than the usual discount to the retailer, so the retailer cannot
offer the regular discount to the customer. On the other hand, these books
are often manufactured better and they tend to be kept in print longer than
most mass market books.
