Donald--your situation should be ideal for spurias. For companion plants
you might try some of the less invasive natives of your area. I suspect
that under your conditons, the spuria foliage would disappear almost
completely during the summer, so annuals would be a good option. They
could be ditched when the spuria foliage reappears in fall, or just left to
freeze.
Plant more spurias! Chehalem Gardens in Oregon is a great source of
quality plants at very reasonable prices.
