Re: CULT: companion plants for spurias

From: Patsiris@aol.com

Dear Donald,
A good source for Spuria Iris is Shepard Iris Garden, 3342 W Orangewood,
Phoenix, AZ. I have been buying from them for three years now and have
received
very nice rhyzomes, all of which lived and bloomed for me. I think that when
they come from a hot place to a hot place, they are better able to aclimate.
As to with achillea, I planted a red flowering variety in a bed with
some bearded
iris and spent all my time trying to keep the achillea from smothering every
thing else. A friend who grows spurias in New Mexico told me that she could
consistantly
get them to bloom earlier (for the iris show) by planting them by the east
side of the house. I happened to have that location vacant, so I tried it.
It works.
My favorite one is Chocolate Fudge, Nies '88, a brown and orange variety.
Also New Vista, Jenkins '95, a purple and ivory plicatta. They are really
adictive.
                                                           Pat in Dallas
