I thank John I. Jones for summarizing the salient points in 'shaving roots'
and potting irises temporarily for giving them a jump start in growth before
placing them in the garden.

I also want to thank Lew Best for reporting his experience and for his kind
words of a personal nature.

Many times, when one does something new or radically different from the
ordinary (shaving roots, potting, etc), it is an adventure into the unknown
for them, and they are apprehensive and expect their experiment to be a
failure, and it turns out so. There are others who are more positive in
their outlook(expecting success), and their results are also positive.

I am happy for those who found the shaving and potting experience to be the
salvation for their new irises during the heat and drought of the summer of
1998.

Again, and this is a repeat of repeats, whatever works for you successfully,
that is what you should do.
