Re: CULT: Shaving roots/WAM's Recipe

From: Pooreplace@aol.com

Morning iris fans...

Twas going to skip past this root shaving discussion, but just can not. I
have had too much luck with it! Walter Moores is right on in his methods as
far as this Oklahoma Citian (who has NO official title here) is concerned...

Again, I must fall back to living 20 blocks from Paul Black (wah wah wah, now
that he's gone) and spending so much of my early iris days with advice from A
to Z patiently provided from both he and Perry Dyer, along with Hooker
Nichols, Chris Vizvarie, the late Cleo Palmer, and several other brilliant
Oklahoma irisarians...

From day 2 (which excludes only the first 5 irises I planted) I was taught to
shave all the roots! (I think Hooker calls it ripping all the irises arms and
legs off)... Paul just always told me that was the surest and safest way of
preventing ANY possible nematode infestation. Now I've never had nematodes,
but I've sure slaundered onto Paul's old place (& Perry's & others too) at
times to see them firing off the smoke under the plastic tarps to eradicate
things like that enough to know I don't ever want to have to do that myself!
In fact the fewer chemicals I use the happier I am. I have an awful lot of
wildlife around here considering the busy four lane I live on...

Last year was the first time I started potting irises... I had moderate
success. Shaving the roots wasn't the problem, it was the medium. This fall
(thanks to Dr. Moores & TBIS Tall Talk article) I started potting according to
Walter's recipe...
The difference is amazing! Glenn Simmons of Missouri told me how wonderful it
was but I was nonetheless astonished after only 2 weeks to find roots coming
out of the bottom of all the pots I'd planted the naked irises in! Roots from
heck were coming out of every hole in the regular as well as the shallow bulb
pots I'd put them in. The only difference with what I did from the recipe is
that I've not gotten a hold of Sam's magic mix yet so used some soppy peat
instead & I plopped a handful of osmocote 40-40-40 on top of them when I threw
them outside.

The increases that are coming on and taking off is also amazing! And folks I
am here to tell you I don't just cut the roots short, I completely pluck them
off or cut them completely to the rhizome as need be! They just take off like
gangbusters & I have never had a loss like this. I just never really knew
how much it helped shaving them when I plopped them down in the beds to begin
with. Now, using the pot method there is no question what your roots are
doing! It is phenomenal! For our sultry summer days & devouring droughts I
believe this may be a big answer to many of our past Oklahoma problems...

From another sold & satisfied root shaver! But not to worry, you won't catch
me doing anything like this to my daylilies!!!
