Re: CULT: Shaving roots/ROT CITY

From: Pooreplace@aol.com

OOOoops!!!

There is one more very important thing I forgot. Now don't anybody stroke out
here! I'm sure I learned this from Perry Dyer and others around me...

When I get my irises in the mail, or from sales, or whatever (ALL BEARDED
ones that is) I NEVER plant them right away... I throw them into brown paper
bags and do a little iris shake & bake type step on them... I shake a good
amount of sevin dust in followed by an ample amount of powdered fungicide. I
shake well, fold top down & leave until planting time which may be anywhere
from 3 months to 3 weeks down the road...

I have seen if we plant these right away especially the iris-goiter types
(that is really funny but too true for us to even laugh) we go STRAIGHT to ROT
CITY! Sometimes they will go down within 3 days no matter whether you chlorox
them or not. The way I do it I'm able to save the chlorox for the washer &
keep myself from smelling like bleach for a week.

I have been doing this for so long I had forgotten to mention it in my main
post. The only problems this will cause you if you skip the shake & bake step
is that aphids (which are born pregnant you know) will appear from nowhere &
devour the green part of your irises... Perhaps Linda Mann has something here
due to the fact that dormancy is probably pretty well in place and not usually
active growth going on is what really makes the roots shoot out and take
off... Just a thought IMHO...

Kath in OKC... who will now kindly go crawl off to bed & shut up for the
weekend!
