Hello Everyone,
It is strange to see the bloom of PINK ATTRACTION in the fall.
I know this was set in CA, but it is odd to see an iris in bloom
this time of year.
I've spent the day correcting a mistake. Several years ago when
I decided to try the SIBs, JIs, LAs and pseuds, I scoped out the
yard to find a location. There being a rather large depression, that
was the location I ultimately chose. Being lazy, I thought since
the depression was already there, I would just line the depression
with old carpet, some being on hand, and then fill in with good soil
and thus avoid working with the red clay. Now, since the bed is
being converted to only LAs, I discovered that all my theories were
not that good. I thought the carpet would smother the surface
vegetation. I thought the roots would penetrate the carpet. I thought
the carpet would disinegrate in a season or two. It did smother the
weeds, but the ragweed was able to come right up through the carpet.
The iris roots did not penetrate the carpet, nor did it disintegrate. I
have spent most of the weekend digging the carpet out only to
discover the clay underneath was nearly dry and totally unworkable.
Those LAs in the stock trough are going to have wait a while longer
to get planted!
