Re: CULT: borer

From: Bill Shear <BILLS@hsc.edu>

There was a local iris grower near here (I never met the person) who was
reputed to go over the rows in winter with a weed burner, destroying the
old foliage. This supposedly took care of leaf spot and any possible borer
eggs. I would be skeptical of this because of the danger of scorching the
rhizomes and opening the way for rot.

The mowing idea sounds reasonable if the mower can be set high enough.
Most people around here keep their mowers set on scalpomatic (about
1/2")--then wonder why their lawns burn out every summer. If I did this
with iris I would be sure to burn or bury the foliage collected in the bag.

Not to use a bag would be to invite trouble--all that rotting iris foliage
lying around all winter!
