Thanks for the correction about pineappling in Iris--I relayed what I had been told--had looked for the subject in my reference books but did not find it--after reading more about it I checked BIC again and finally found the same explanation there--anyway--when the leaves look all ziggy-zaggy--I just give them lots of water and feed them and the z-z goes away--so maybe it is not true pinneappling but some persons here call it that--
I really have enjoyed the talk about David Schreiner--the anticipation of him coming--the description of his talk and the boat ride-- I am a member of Portland Iris Society--so have gotten to know him as a friend, rather than "the greatest grower of greatest Iris"-- and he is just as human as the rest of us---several years ago--at the Sacramento meeting I think--he was looking at this wondrous flower--tri-colored and big and beautiful--I spoke to him and said something about how great it was--and it turned out to be one of theirs and will beintroduced probably next year--we discussed several other seedlings and the end of this tale is that every year when we are out in Portland visiting around show time and bloom time at their garden, we traipse over and look at all the seedlings and give him a list of the ones we think are worthy of introducing-- several times we have run into Steve Schreiner and he also is most friendly---I guess I am lucky to be able to visit the gardens of so many great hybridizers--and to have had some of them give me garden training when I was an Apprentice Judge--
I received a copy of the 1999 TB Symposium yesterday, and the first thing I looked for was old friends--Laced Cotten is 14th, Mary Francis is 15th, Going My Way is 20th, and farther down the list are Gay Parasol,Camelot Rose, Ringo,Bayberry Candle Kilt Lilt--and Cherry Smoke--just sorta proves that some Iris are still great, even though there are many newer ones now.
Also good to see some by newer hybridizers--rather discouraging to see the total % vote--21.84%--don't AIS members think enough of the Symposium List to send their votes in?
Bright and sunny today but snow forcasted by Halloween--Carryl in western Montana--where all the leaves have decided to leave the trees and land on the gardens now--don't they know I don't want much on the Iris? Zone 3/4
