Linda--with late plants to be taken care of---first decide if you want them to stay dormant or to grow--if to stay dormant, keep them cool, not much light and water sparingly till Spring--if you want them to grow--keep them warm, lots of light and water more--they will grow under these latter conditions but might tend to be pale and spindly--I always give them a bit extra of Iron if so-- A lot depends upon your winters--here we cannot count on heavy snow cover and usually have a 'Chinook' in mid-January which really dries everything out--and since the ground is frozen the plants cannot suck water up and really dessicate-- If you have reliable heavy snow cover all winter, then try some outside--but I have saved more by keeping them in the dormant stage for the winter and then starting them to grow in the spring.
Almost everywhere in the U.S. the plants will respond to 'that Spring feeling' and really put on a growth spurt--but trying to get them to grow in the fall when the weather is 'winter is 'a comin' feeling' is hard--
Kathy--your antics with the lights is really hillarious--I am sure you did not think that at the time--here if Christmas lights are left out all year--the birds go after the red ones--so most two-story houses have few red ones up high--
Carryl in westernMontana -Zone 3/4--winter is a commmen' sure feelslike it today!!
