Hello Arnold - glad to hear you got some 'weeds' from the Siberian
seeds. They will be weedy, I guarantee. The seeds that you sent me did
well also.
For the record, Arnold sent me 3 different crosses with that new early
blooming beardless species from ?China?, crosses made by somebody? I
don't have my notes handy - will be more specific in another post. All
three resulted in several vigorous seedlings as did the other beardless
species. I've been trying to remember to water them off and on - they
seem to be quite tolerant of my benign neglect. They are growing in
half-shade on the east side of the house in a bucket of potting soil
made of a mix of creek sand, greenhouse potting medium (a Promix type
local concoction), maybe some sieved soil and mushroom compost. I will
transplant them to the garden in Feb or March when/if it's wet and mild
for a few weeks.
3 seedlings (purchased) from Ghio's seed mix of PCNs have appeared in a
another washtub that I was using to start some columbine seeds, also in
part shade. The seeds rested a year before germinating. The few that
germinated the first year didn't live. I have deliberately tortured
these guys - flooding them with huge quantities of water now and then
alternating with no water till the columbines wilt. They aren't very
big, but seem to be doing well. Got my fingers crossed that they don't
turn out to be something else.
And the seeds from Barb Johnson from several crosses by Mueller
germinated well but did NOT like it here - sulked, rotted, died, but
there are a BUNCH of them that have lived, and while short, are very
sturdy looking. Too small to plant out this year - will see how many
make it to spring.
And the I. setosa alba (I think) that Anner sent tried it, didn't like
it , and went to heaven.
