I have (finally!) purloined a bit of time and put a selection of Historic
Siberian cultivars on the HIPS website http://www.worldiris.com
Some cautions are in order:
Historic Siberians were not well documented in the AIS Check Lists
or in
contemporary literature
Catalog photos of Historic Siberians are EXTREMELY rare
Accurate photographic color is even more elusive when shooting
Siberians
compared to Bearded iris
Older catalog's descriptions of Siberians leave much to the
imagination
Variation cultivar to cultivar is less marked than in Beardeds
There are FAR fewer iris enthusiasts who are knowledgeable in the
field of Historic Siberians as compared to Bearded iris
If not assiduously deadheaded, Siberians will 'rogue' far more often
than Bearded iris and the 'rogue' will often supplant the true
cultivar
Sad to say, 'imposters' are about twice as likely to be received
when
purchasing or swapping Historic Siberians compared to
obtaining
Historic Beardeds
With the above caveats in firmly in mind, you are invited to view and
critique the new HIPS Siberian webpage.
Cheers,
Mike, mlowe@worldiris.com -- http://www.worldiris.com
