Re: CAN PREEN HURT NEW IRIS BED

Cheryl: Have read your message about using Preen in your new iris beds. Preen is a pre-emergent herbicide which forms a barrier that prevents seeds from germinating or germinated seeds breaking through the barrier. If you followed the label instructions and watered in the Preen everything will be fine. As soon as you start to plant your irises you will break that barrier and will have to reapply the Preen. Preen works its action only on seeds. It will not harm your irises or any other plant that is fully grown. I have used it for the last 5 years with out any problem. With respect to using Poast on your flower beds. Poast is a grass weed herbicide and will kill all grass and grass-like weeds with the exception of Poa annua (annual blue-grass). It will retard the growth of Poa annua but will not kill it. Poast can be sprayed over the top of irises without causing them any harm. All this information has come from my own personal experiences. I have found that the best herbicide to use on the iris beds is a product called Surflan.  We used it in our gardens when we were preparing for the '94 AIS Convention held in Portland, OR. The application rate that we used was supposed to last 6 - 9 months. In effect it lasted for nearly 18 months. There are two drawbacks to using Surflan - 1. It is extremely expensive!!!! 2. It will stain any clothing it comes in contact with.
