Hi Allison,
<Chuckle> That sure does sound familiar. The 1 October 1987 earthquake had us
taking temporary shelter in our backpacking tent in the backyard, while the
aftershocks rolled through and stirred around the swimming pool and collapsed
concrete fence walls. We had lots and lots of time to get those TBs into the
ground while we were living in the 'hot weather' of Temple City, San Gabriel
Valley, Los Angeles County, California.
Now we're on Puget Sound in Washington, Zone 8, and we're racing to get our
latest deliveries of twenty-six Japanese Iris and twenty Siberian Iris into the
ground. The first frosts of the season are turning the landscape into silver and
white in the early mornings. Forecasted low tempertures of 30-35 degrees F. are
becoming routine now.
(TB) Immortality has been blooming for the past month, but the cold temperatures
are beginning to discourage the many buds that remain. The other rebloomer TB
iris are still awaiting transplantation into their new flower beds, so we won't
see (TB) Queen Dorothy do her fourth rebloom in the snow at Thanksgiving as
usual this year.
Yes, yes...the TBs are supposed to be in the ground already...but you know how
it is. Too many new iris and too many new flower beds to plant <g>.
Nevertheless, we'll see how the TB iris like their new flower beds this Winter.
Our biggest concern right now is that the moles don't disturb the new plantings,
and the deer continue to step around and not on the new iris.
The Louisiana iris are doing better this year in their new home with a Southern
view. Perhaps they'll finally bloom next year.
The Siberian Iris did very well this year. The foliage of Early Bluebird reached
a length of 47 inches. So did Tiffany Lass. Dark Circle and Reddy Maid reached a
length of 49 inches. Even Mabel Cody reached 36 inches. They seem to like it
here.
Neomarica gracilis is proliferating in its indoor abode. It seems to be walking
into places where it definitely does not belong! The kitchen is most certaily
not big enough for this plan...or these plants any longer.
Iris japonica will soon be lodged in the garage on the chillier nights this
week.
Our early 'purple' tomatoes this year stood as mute (and dead) testimony to the
fact we didn't experience a true Summer season. We did get a few late tomatoes
of poor quality, but the northerly iris have adored the cool and moist
conditions. I wonder what temperatures the Winter season will bring us on Puget
Sound for this year?
