RE: CULT:Root shaving revisited

From: "Chris Hollinshead" <cris@netcom.ca>

While I most of time have to agree with your opinions and findings, Bill, I
have to disagree with your conclusion stated below in your recent e-mail to
this group.

While it may indeed be true that some new roots formed off the old on your
plantings and no new formations were noted I am firmly convinced through
experimentation that shaving the old roots will stimulate extremely vigorous
new root formation to nourish the plant. I believe that this root growth
will be much more vigorous than that which forms off the old existing roots
if left on the rhizome. As I have stated here previously I have consistently
had very full root systems develop from shaved rhizomes in approx 14 days to
the point that they are coming out the bottom of 6 inch size pots and upon
unpotting they were observed to be at the point of just starting to become
root bound.

This has been my experience from pseudo-experiments started approx 1 year
ago. I have found this a valuable technique to give my new iris acquisitions
a good start prior to planting out in their more or less permanent garden
position.

My interest in this procedure was initially stimulated by Walter Moores
experiences which is related on our CIS website at the following direct URL:

If you happen to be a new list member perhaps you would find this above
article to be of background interest this discussion.

Others have also experienced similar considerable success with this
methodology and have conveyed it to this discussion group.
