If the Reemay is touching the bloomstalks, it doesn't really offer much
protection that far away from the 'warmth' of the ground. I have used
rebar electric fence posts (4 ft long, 3/8 inch diameter) with
connecting 'tubes' of 1/2 inch diameter plastic pipe to make an arched
supporting cover for the Reemay over rebloom stalks with great results
(2 sets of posts & arch). Anchor the Reemay around the base with rocks
or boards to keep out the drafts. Yep, looks like ghosts hovering in
the garden.
Here, it is sometimes worth it because of the erratic temperature
swings. For example, it is supposed to be in the 20s this weekend
(record early cold), then be warm again next week. I may cover the
nasturtiums etc to get thru the hard freeze, then uncover them for the
predicted warmth next week.
I will also definitely cover and add a few cold water bottles around the
late entry potted irises still in the root race.
