Hi All,
I wanted to give everyone an update on the hurricane/rain damage that we
experienced here in eastern North Carolina recently. My TB's
(over 150) sat in over 2 inches of water for several weeks. I posted a
note asking if anyone on iris-talk thought I should dig them up and pot them
until the ground dried out and I got a 50-50 response. I just wanted to
let you all know that we decided to leave them all in the ground and take our
chances. The weather was not consistent enough after the Hurricane
Floyd to do much gardening and there was just too much water. The ground
has finally dried out quite a bit and "all" of the iris have survived quite
nicely. So far we have not had any rot showing on the whole lot. I'm
keeping my fingers crossed that it will continue this way.
The amazing thing was that in spite of hurricane force winds and 20+ inches
of rain, the iris that were reblooming before the storm continued to do their
absolute best to keep on reblooming. It was amazing. The hardiest of
these rebloomers seemed to be Duke of Earl, Violet Music, Immortality, and Pink
Attraction. They put on a profuse show for the entire month of September
and most of October. Currently, we have City Lights, Violet Music and High
Ho Silver reblooming. The temps have been in the high 60's to low
70's during the day and it hasn't been below 43 at night yet, so no frost or
freeze yet.
I just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions and help during this
terrible time. With any luck, we will have a beautiful show this
Spring.
