I am only familiar with them in the ground in Japan.  I saw masses of them when
we lived in Tokyo growing there and south of Tokyo.  That's about the same
latitude as Atlanta but not the same height.  The ones that have survived in the
ground for me (zone 6) are planted on the east side of large boulders.  It's a
very dry spot so I assume the boulders retain moisture underground.  They
survive but have not bloomed.  In Japan they seem to grow particularly on the
slopes of  steep ravines and in partial to deep shade.  Have also seen them at
the edges of shallow water.  Freezing kills them to the ground but does not kill
the root system both here and in Japan.  Don't know about your conditions.  Good
