Louise, you didn't say where you are or where you are moving.  That makes a big difference in the right answer to your query.  If you are moving to a cold-winter area like mine, it is getting rather late to move iris with any real hope of their survival.  I suppose if you are moving to a USDA zone 5 or farther south, there is still time to lift and just move the iris bare root, then plant as soon as you can upon arrival at your new home.  If they have to stay out of the ground any length of time, as others have already noted, potting them up right now when they are dug is the safest bet.  Best wishes!  I don't envy you having to move.
