The criteria we use at our sort nights for the club sales to indicata a
"probable" bloomerr the following spring is:

Five leaves on the fan and signs of increase on the rhizome (toe,
pre-toe wedge, or swelling like a garlic clove)

Of course a lot depends on the growing area, soil conditions, how long
the rz is out of the ground and how long it get to develop a good root
system before winter sets in (among others)  <grin>
