Maybe there is a confusion here between SDB's and MDB's - the SDB's appear to grow without regard to cold. I have a whole yard full of them here in Texas that bloom up a storm in the spring (some are rebloomers) and we do not have extremely cold winters; but the MDB's most definitely  need cold. There are a few MDB's that will manage to bloom here (ZIPPER will do so about 2 out of 3 years - but then I have it planted in a cinder block to optimize the cold).  We just do not buy them here...they are too unreliable. But up north, they do fine (the Willotts live in Ohio and breed them). I am currently 'testing' quite a few for them to see if any could possibly survive and bloom here. That would be nice. (Linda, you do not have the monopoly on being an iris torturer). 

I'd say plant a few (SDB's) and see for yourself. Conditions vary so much , that is the only way to find out. 
I can grow medians like weeds, but Donald Eaves, just a bit over yonder from me, throws up his hands in despair when he tries.

Dell in Plano, Texas -  zone 7/8 where most iris have gone dormant and taken on buckskin colored foliage - day 69 and counting without rain - at least a cold front came through and the temperatures have dropped into the mid/upper 90's finally - we'll take whatever relief we can get.

    I have SDB's in Sun City and last year we never had frost let alone snow 
and my SDB not only bloom but I took best of section at our spring show. The 
thought that SBD's need cold needs to be looked at again.
    The year I'm trying MTB to see if I can get them to grow here. Will let 
you know if they make it.
