Dennis,
My recollection is that I the leaf variegation in I. pallida Argentea and
I. pallida Variegata (AKA "Zebra") is due to a non-chromosomal
(cytoplasmic?) genetic effect and is NOT transmitted through the seed when
these cultivars are crossed with green-leaf varieties. I do know that the
Ensminger-Kasperek lines of variegated leaf bearded irises are NOT based on
the variegated leaf pallidas.
Is there anyone else who can shed more light on this subject?
