I tried once more, and did a search for irises, and sure enough there is an
article there. Nice photos, but the article left much to be desired. Rather
confused and misinformed in parts. F'rinstance:
"There are literally thousands of colors to choose from, and three common
species--The Bearded Iris, Arial Iris and Siberian (Non-Bearded)Irises."
"If you pick off the wilted buds before they form pods and grow seeds,
sometimes the plant will produce a second set of blooms, further extending
the season. "
Pansies do this, but irises?
"....powdery mildew, which is about the only pest to Irises. Insects usually
do not bother them much except leaf hoppers in late summer. "
So what is all this fuss about borers then?? :-)
Irises prefer full sun, but will grow and thrive in most lighting
conditions. They really prefer at least a half day of sun but will grow in
shaded areas.
However, when planted in deep shade they will bloom quite a bit later, and
have less blooms ....
