Is it too early to be thinking about next year?

Would anybody care to suggest perennials that look nice in a
bed with irises? I planted Trdescantia [Andersoniana Leonara] this
spring and it's really enjoyed all the rain. Any suggestions for
something that flowers from July on. Zone 5 hardy.

Since I asked the question on alfalfa I thought I should share
what I found.

1) Is a company making fertilizers based on alfalfa.

2) Looks to be a study comparing various soil admendments including
alfalfa hay. NB they aren't testing iris growth.

This section from the findings section appears the most interesting.

4. On the amendment study, the overall best amendments were hog and poultry manure, followed by alfalfa hay. The alfalfa and pea hay were generally as good as the
fresh, old or composted cattle manures. The barley straw + fertilizer N and P did not prove to be an effective approximation of manure. The effect of amendment on
aggregate stability (which is an index of soil quality or health was of the order crop residues > livestock manures > fertilizer/check treatments.

BUT somebody should be able to make more sense of it then I did.

3) Is a receipe for alfalfa "tea" Sounds more like a sour mash to me.

In addition there are plenty of pages dealing with green manure
and alfalfa use on roses. I ignored the pages dealing with the little
rascals and the related discussions-)

I know done of the links prove anything but I found them
interesting.
