Re: using pink irises to achieve different colored beards/earlier bloom-- you might want to consider using
1. PRECIOUS LITTLE PINK, Byer's reblooming IB which is pod fertile (can't remember about pollen, but I think I got an SDB cross with it this year). Think it has white beards, but am not sure about that, and haven't got my computer data base input caught up, sorry!
2. COUNTRY DANCE, Evelyn Jone's gorgeous smoky-salmon-pink (here) with blue-violet beards, which I seem to remember someone telling me was fertile, tho I didn't set any seed on it.

Many of the newer IBs, particularly, are fertile, and it might short-cut the process for you as opposed to using SDBs. Tho there are some gorgeous blue bearded pinks. Dave Niswonger has both SDBs and TBs that he doesn't consider ultimate yet, but they sure look good to me. (Ex: BLUE CHIP PINK and SKY BLUE PINK)

Nyla Hughes, St. Louis area, MO Zone 6 where the brief heat has broken, it's supposed to be 40 degrees tonite, and I'm taking out a couple trees to get more LAs in, and may have to yank the tomatoes out prematurely to finish planting JIs.

"I would use the
pink IB with these seedlings and hope for a quality blue bearded
pink or blue bearded yellow BB or TB that blooms earlier than any
of the aforementioned late blooming TB's.
