The link given is misleading as part of it is missing. For messages left
here in January (all 677 of them), you need to go to
http://www.egroups.com/messages/iris-talk/16067 The number appears to be
the total number of messages left since the start of iris-talk.
http://www.egroups.com/group/iris-talk will give you a brief description of
the group, and a listing of month and year to select to view messages.
Now, the interesting part. each of us has a cookie left on our machines by
egroups that identifies us to egroups and then the lists that we belong to
are made readily available to us. The real test would be to connect to
egroups from a machine other than the one we normally use--then you would
not have the cookie. You can also use another browser that you may have
installed on your own machine as well, if you have not used it to access
egroups or imported your settings.
However, since iris-talk is a public group, Kitty is correct in stating that
the messages are public--anyone can view them. If you go to
http://www.egroups.com/group/fishadmin you will not be able to see any
archived messages at all, since this is a private list, however there is a
listing of the numbers, just like there is for iris-talk.
Should anyone be worried about Spam being generated using the archives on
egroups as a harvest site for e-mail addresses, you can lay your fears to
rest. The e-mail address of any member is not completely given. If I
wanted to harass storylade from the address in the archives, I could not,
because I do not have her address. However, it is not clear to me whether
addresses given in the body of the e-mail itself are available. Even if
this were true and I was able to find storeylade@.... would it be worth my
while to pursue it? Not very likely.
However, the archives at Mallorn do contain the e-mail address of the sender
of the message. This could serve as a harvest spot for spammers trolling
for addresses. Whether it is practical to remove a portion of the address
would be a topic to be taken up, privately, with John who could consult with
the keeper of those archives, which, particularly for the new people, also
cover the original iris-talk list started by Tom.
Mike brought up the frequency of Spam received by himself and others. He is
really a babe in arms as I have been on the Internet for more than 10
years, even pre-dating the web. I have about a dozen e-mail addresses which
are checked on a daily basis (to the tune of around 100 messages a day).
recently I had my worst Spam week in memory with 27 spams received total for
all accounts. This week I have had 10 so far (my week runs from Sunday
night to Sunday night, so I may get a few more this week--they seem to
mainly hit around the weekend. This is a typical amount--just around 1.5%
of my mail is Spam. That is a much better ratio than I get from the USPS.
Even on that high week, the count was under 5%. If you do want to have a
hand in fighting Spam, join SpamCop and report your Spam.
http://www.spamcop.net is the URL.
Nevertheless, it does pay to watch what you are saying when you send e-mail,
and be sure you are sending it to the right location, i.e. private mail to
the individual, public mail to the list.
