Hi All,
People in northern regions grow banana trees, but they don't expect them to
weather the winters outdoors! Indeed, they bring the trees indoors for the
winter. Those who don't want to go to the extra trouble to provide needed
conditions don't grow the banana tree.
Iris genetics SEEM (please note the hedging! LOL) predisposed to grant the
prettier faces to the more temperate zones. As evidence, I present the love
the iris community has for Barry Blyth's program and the programs of the west
coast hybridizers. (I stand guilty as charged.)
I'm not convinced that we can produce a universal tall bearded iris that will
grow well in all areas of the world. Recent discussions seem to lend support
to this thought. I would like to suggest that hybridizers, who do not live
in the above mentioned regions, work to introduce irises that perform well in
their own regions rather than the world market; however, I won't suggest
this. Why? Because we are now a global community, and it is human nature to
want what others have. Also, it is difficult for such hybridizers to get
enough regional support to sustain their programs.
