Spam, in my experience, seems to be a result of:
a) having ordered from or requested information from an untrustworthy
source, even if you think you know better.
b) posting your email address un-anonymously at auction sites
c) subscribing to informational sites
d) being a member of a group that has been targeted by spammers
I'm fairly sure, that spam is a result of living in the current electronic
age. No different than ordering from a nursery catalogue, and getting 6 new
catalogues from whomever they sold their list. And dumping them in the post
office trash can, like deleting and adding them to your list of unsolicited
senders in your mail program.
I get about two or three a day. I ALWAYS forward the email, with details,
to abuse@whatever_isp.com that they were issued from, even if the reply
might be "Oh, this miscreant is only pretending to be from here...", which
is the usual reply from msn.com. (Odd how many others have replied that
they have taken care of the problem by deactivating the spammers account.)
