This is what I have always thought regarding tomatoes. We get some shocking
late freezes here each year, and tomato, and cucurbit seedlings have to be
vigorously guarded. I can often be seen (by anyone else up that early) in
the garden in my pj's running water over my tomato plants. That is, if the
hose isn't frozen solid, and then I have to cover them with sheets of
newspaper.
If they are small enough, a few upturned pots does the trick - put out in
the evenings, and brought in in the mornings.
I have used the upturned pot method to keep SDB flowers dry enough to
pollenate, if rain is imminent.
