A recent article I read said that gypsum helps the individual clay
particles clump together into larger particles. Sounds counterintuitive
but when the fine particles clump into bigger ones, they create air and
moisture spaces and giving you better friability.

In a new bed, it is more effective to till in humus and vegetable matter
as gypsum takes a while to work. Once a year for several years. 50 lbs
per 1000sq ft
