Earlier this year, we had a thread, or discussion, about the viability of old
mother rhizomes or "bloom stalk" rhizomes. For those still undecided, let me
tell you about SUMMER RADIANCE. SR is a BRIGHT yellow that I introduced in
96. It is one of the first to bloom each spring. In a club member's yard,
it survived the hail storm of 98 to send up a stalk and bloom when no others
did. (Just braggin here! LOL)
We had an early season this year, 2000, and the display garden was nearly
bare by show time. But, there was SR putting up her repeat stalks---4 of
them. When the rhizome sale was over, they had stripped her bare . . . all
that was left was 4 used up rhizomes with shriveled, brown stalks sticking
skyward. I must say I was concerned.
While I was at the garden this afternoon, I checked in on SR. And guess what
I found? Nine new little fans reaching for the sky! Hurrah for old mothers
. . . rhizomes, that is.
Oh, yes. One more thing . . . her daddy wasn't very healthy here . . . one
of those 'tenderfoot' gents! A cross I probably wouldn't make now.
Yes, it's a she . . . why? Cause I said so!
