Big difference between zone 5 climate and southern zone 7/8. Although
the temperatures and dry/wet cycles may seem similar, they are
appararently different enough to affect the native vegetation, so why
not iris cultivars?
As others have pointed out, rot susceptibility has been around forever,
& some years are worse in some regions than other, but also as others
have pointed out, zone 8 was identified as the southern limit in which
TBs could be grown successfully years ago. It's a tradeoff - zone 5 has
iris borers, soggy zone 8 has soft rot. From what I've learned about
borers on this list, I think I prefer soft rot <g>. So far, I've seen
no evidence of borers here, but I hear they can be a problem in this
region. You can soak your yard with Cygon in zone 5 or Clorox in zone 8
<g>. Just as litter cleanup helps combat borers, doing everything
possible to minimize stress helps minimize rot. That's minimize stress
to the plants anyway - all that fussin around may increase your own
stress....
