I live near John Bruce, and the only time I had a rot problem with
California irises is when I watered them in immediately after planting.
Learning from that mistake I do not water my bearded irises... I let them
settle in naturally with whatever rain falls, and have not had any
post-planting rot since then. (Spring rot is a whole nuther story)
