Re. OT: publication of iris-talk

A couple of other thoughts since launching the publication discussion.

The messages on this site are now at 23471. Clearly, we're talking
the use of only a fraction of them. And nothing private or
embarrassing or controversial. Recent exchanges that come to mind
would be the use of alfalfa as mulch/fertilizer, Clorox solutions to
fight rhizome rot -- both under CULTIVATION. Which cultivars bloom
well in which parts of the country -- under WHAT BLOOMS FOR ME. And
of course the wealth of information from iris-talkers in all parts of
the country on those cultivars that REBLOOM for them. We'd have to
be careful to include a list of all commercial growers in all parts
of the country, so there wouldn't be a tacit endorsement of anyone.
Maybe some growers would want to place ads in such a publication,
thereby paying for publication costs, assuming AIS would be
interested in publishing.

Material to perhaps leave out would be Mike Sutton's hugely generous
information about irises that are proving to be good parents for
them. It would be totally understandable for the Suttons to choose
to keep those details to themselves; already giving the lineage of
each new introduction is a generous gesture that not all hybridizers
include. Anything like that would be checked with the person in
question.

The links are already in the system, so topics can be accessed as
they were offered. The editor can choose what seems central to the
discussion and edit the comments down to the nuggets of the wisdom.
Anyone who can't be contacted would not be included; and anyone who
wants to be left out of the discussion would be. Or some might
choose to use aliases.

Do people still think such a process would inhibit participation in
the e-group? If so, that would be a legitimate concern. Let's keep
kicking the idea around.
