Yep, Neil, all too easy to get swept up in looking for relationships
when there is still the 'garbage in, garbage out' factor. But the
pedigrees still may be right if the dominant WHOLE CLOTH type inhibitor
can arise spontaneously, either in other Iris species (other than
balkana/reichenbachii ancestor of PROGENITOR?) or in hybrids with
balkana/reichenbachii background that haven't previously carried the
inhibitor. Not too likely, but the inhibitor had to occur spontaneously
somewhere sometime.
But the inhibitor isn't what I'm interested in. When I first started
charting pedigrees (6 years ago??? ), I looked for common ancestors
among the irises I had that were tougher than most, and WHOLE CLOTH was
one that showed up repeatedly, as did balkana/reichenbachii, among
others. However, for all I know, the hybridizers who were using WHOLE
CLOTH a lot may have been working in climates that gave them the
opportunity (necessity?) of selecting tough seedlings and it may have
had little to do with the source of the genes.
Similarly, cultivars with a lot of aphylla tend not to do all that well
here. Again, I don't know if that means that most hybridizers with TBs
with heavy doses of aphylla were selecting seedlings in a cooler, less
drought prone environment or ....?.
I don't usually chart cultivars back all the way anymore - I just go
back far enough to look for ancestors that I've grown. If I find a lot
that I've tried that have died, I usually don't gamble. Fortunately
(?), there are a lot of cultivars out there that have several ancestors
that grow here reasonably well

<Linda, you can't necessarily believe published pedigrees. I know of
two currently marketed CV's that have a dominant trait (the WHOLE CLOTH
type inhibitor) that ..is..not..in the pedigree. ...The PROGENITOR
inhibitor doesn't appear out of [PROGENITOR] .. is in the pedigree>.
