CULT: roots & tough cultivars

A few years ago, when Walter introduced us listers to the concept of
starting our new rhizomes in small (3 to 4 inch) pots in the shade, we
talked about how the 'tough' ones seemed to be the fastest to grow new
roots out the bottom of the pots, about 2 weeks being the fastest.

Now that it's finally cooled off a little (?????), I've been setting out
a few seedlings & new cultivars, unpotting a few others to check the
roots (or lack of roots).

So, ta da, here are the super root growers for this year's small number
of new cultivars: VALENTINE'S DAY, CARNIVAL SUNSET, SPRING FANTASY,
JAEL'S CONQUEST (a replacement - it's still probably alive, but lost in
the "flower bed" = weeds), and, at the head of the class, RECURRING
GLORY. I can't believe the mass of new roots on RG.

Among the seedling crop was an unknown bronze x bee pod baby with about
a 1/2 inch rhizome with the biggest mess of roots I've ever seen on
such a small plant - the longest one was 28" long! The roots were
tangled around inside a 5 inch deep, 6 inch diameter pot.

The last post today, then I'll try to shut up for awhile. Although I do
have some nice photos of iris torture to share....
