My experience has been that if the mother rhizome was a rotter, the
increases were also tender and did not do well and after several years
they died or I got tired of their petulance and tossed them. Whether this
is because of the diseased (?) rhizome they came from to start with or
the tendency of that cultivar I do not know. For me it will take two to
three years growth for many to show their true reliability. Some people
around here dig up and reset every single plant every year (another goal
than mine). About the time my clumps get big and full and lots of blooms,
they are becoming crowded, have the decaying mother rhizomes from years
past, and more subject to disease and problems. Then the true colors
show. Sorry, that's not much help is it?
One thing that has helped is that, if the rhizome rotted in the 1st or
2nd year, remove the increases from that decaying tissue; cut or break
(another major iris decision) them away, treat the exposed area (I like
Comet) and replant. I had some success if I completely severed any
connection with the dying rhizome even though I replanted right away in
the same area. Be sure and remove that dead and decayed yuck from the
garden. Then you really have to watch for rot and keep treating and
babying them until they make up their mind if they will live at your
place or not! At that point, it's yippeee its a keeper!!!.....or hasta la
vista baby! Another thing I've found important is that good insect
control usually means better rot control.
I do baby and nurture the new iris until they are rooting in and growing,
then it is up to them and nature. I try to practice good, healthy
gardening including insect and disease control to a degree but I refuse
to take all the fun out of gardening. There are lots of good iris out
there. We listers just have to keep sharing what they are for us!
Sorry to go on and on
