About 20 years ago, living in KY, I bought a packaged Iris labelled as
"Staten Island." This plant was an excellent grower, increased fast, was
extremely drought tolerant, and was even resistant to the darn iris borer.
Not knowing better, for several years, I thought I had the real thing. It
even took a Blue Ribbon at an Iris Show.
However, I got hold of some very old plant catalogs. In a 1948 catalog,
there was a color photo of a very much looking STATEN ISLAND. In some other
catalogs, going forward into the 1950's I noticed that all the STATEN ISLAND
Irises in the catalogs were all the same. My Iris was obviously something
else.
It was later identified as LORELEY, an Iris that dates back to 1909.
